Overview
In this lesson, Katy Holmes works with her 2nd-grade students to develop their understanding of money, and using monetary quantities to add and subtract multiple two-digit numbers. This engages them in working across three-digit numbers with zeros. Katy’s students are given a sheet listing different objects available for them to “purchase” for other students, with a total budget of $300. They are challenged to determine how much they can buy to come as close as possible to their budget without exceeding it. She recognizes that her students may have brought prior conceptions around subtracting across zeros that may prove challenging to them in the task. She works with her students as a whole group and in small groups across the documented lesson.
By watching this lesson, teachers will learn how to prompt students to make use of available tools, such as place-value blocks, to visualize and support their problem solving.
Katy has been teaching elementary school for 13 years, mostly at her current school in Polk County, Florida.
