Teacher Commentary

COMMENTARY BY COACH LINDA FISHER: I am intrigued by the idea of having students look at mathematical expressions as objects. I think about the work on van Hiele levels of how students perceive geometrical figures and their attributes, how students move from thinking that shape looks like a house or a door. But with explicit experience students begin to notice things like angles or corners, the size of the angles, the number of angles. So I am interested to see how students will think about the mathematical objects that the team is presenting to them. I am also very interested in the planning strategies, decisions about what ways of presenting the material will allow students to focus on the mathematics. How do we help develop professional learning communities that can probe into the subtleties of the lesson at that level?
