Overview

In closing their post-lesson debrief, SVMI mathematics coach Pam Broussard asks Melissa Nix to restate her goal for the lesson. Melissa responds that “I was hoping that they would be able to see the relationship of multiplying two polynomials to get a total product and then being able to also look at a product and get the two factors.” 

Melissa notes that, while this lesson was significantly challenging for some students, on the whole, she felt like the group made significant progress in their conceptual trajectory. Melissa shares her goals for where she might take the students after the lesson. 

Teacher Commentary

It is expected that we all share our work in our classroom. … I have built this relationship with them; I've spent three weeks at least since the very beginning of school, not even doing content, but doing these tasks for teamwork, and challenges, and conversations about math learning, and growth mindset, so that by now, a student’s okay if I take their work and I show it. Because I tried to set up a classroom environment where everybody can learn from one another. We all have different strengths in different areas.
