Lisa Hennefarth discusses how she supported students during their learning, especially during moments of feeling stuck. She describes making connections between the video of a swim race and the problem/graph students were working with. She talks about how she monitored students’ engagement during different moments of the lesson, considering different options she might have explored for their sharing. She observes that multiple cycles of sharing allowed students to hear several other approaches. Once they were back in their own tables, they were then positioned to improve their own commentaries.

Teacher Commentary

Lisa Hennefarth

I walk in a figure eight. It's not because of certain students that I walk in any particular way. But it’s helpful in knowing where and who your students are, in order to be able to engage with a student that I know is going to struggle with an activity like this. I'm going to look over their shoulder. I'm going to see, are they stuck? Are they partnered with somebody who’s going to take over? I don't want a partner that's going to take over. I want you to work with somebody that is going to guide you.
