Lisa Hennefarth prompts her students to finish their work with their partners or group of three, putting the “finishing touches” on their commentaries. She then begins the “discuss and summarize” phase, and invites selected students to come up and share their work. She reminds the whole group to listen, not to critique at this point. The first pair reads their commentary. The class applauds. Lisa says “I want you to think about their final graph, and whether we were able to visualize the race, having the graph behind us.” She invites a second group up to share their commentary. As he reads, Lisa points to specific points on the graph on the overhead projector. Lisa suggests that as they listen to the commentaries, students can use the graph to visualize what is happening in the competition. A third group shares their work, accompanied by a drawing of a winners’ podium. A fourth group shares, highlighting “around 48 seconds, things start to change… the swimmers are neck and neck… Genelle accelerates to pass Barbara…”

Teacher Commentary

You can see that they were actually able to get up and talk about who won the race. In fact, I sequenced the students that way. The first set of students didn't call out any of the mathematics; it was just the story. Then, as I sequenced them, they got more detailed and more detailed.
