After completing the review of the problem, Lisa Hennefarth pivots the lesson to challenge the students to create the radio commentary. She asks them to “write as much as you want… Lots of great detail.” She prompts them to create a first draft on their own on the whiteboards. Lisa circulates around the room as the students write their drafts on their whiteboards. After a few minutes of writing, Lisa asks students to finish up.

Teacher Commentary

Lisa Hennefarth

I came to teaching out of the business world. I tell students all the time that you need to be able to project, you need to be able to defend your reasoning. So if you’re working for The Gap, why are you going to sell that hot pink t-shirt in Florida and a navy blue t-shirt in San Francisco? I tell the students, “Do you know that they actually sit around a room and talk about the color palettes? And they look at sales and trends and colors?  That’s a real job!” That fashion merchandising is all mathematics, so even though it's creative, there's an element of style, it's all about numbers. When you walk into a store, you make an impression in the first 20 seconds and X number of feet inside the store. Your decision is made, the way you feel. That's all statistics and modeling.
