Lisa Hennefarth presents step two of the lesson, the “explore phase,” in which students will get up from their seats, sharing their drafts with students who were not at their table. She asks students to share with at least three other students, listening to each other about what they’ve written, asking clarifying questions, and listening to their partner’s draft, in a “successive pair share.” Students circulate around the room, reading their drafts aloud to others. Lisa reminds students to share with just one other person at a time.

This lesson really focuses on how to read a graph and how to be able to determine honestly who had won the race, by how much time, and how many times did the race change leads by reading the graph. In our curriculum, we don't talk about a single element on a graph enough, and we don't talk about multiple things, like having three people on that graph.
