Continuing the lesson, Lisa Hennefarth begins by restating the expectations, to stand up and share their drafts with one other student. Then after sharing, she asks students to return to their tables and write up a “best possible radio commentator” account of what happened who won the race. She distributes large chart paper to students at their tables, so that they can begin their work with partners to develop the best commentary.

Teacher Commentary

Lisa Hennefarth

When I’m designing lessons, I think about the learning goal and the language goal. Talking with each other deepens both of those goals. At the end, I often say, “Let's think about what we learned today. So tonight, when you go off and do your practice, I want you to be thinking about all the things that we did in class today.” I want to know whether the students actually walked away knowing that well. I think they they did.
